This year for the first time in many years we are beginning to feel the pinch of an economic slow down which one way or another is going to affect all of us, whether it be with the rising price of fuel, the rising prices of everyday goods in the shops or if the worst comes to the worst some of us may even be made redundant from work. Whatever happens we will all be touched by it in some way and because of these we will all have less spare money in our pockets and whatever money we do have we will be slightly reluctant to part with it. Many of life’s luxuries we can afford to do without and this will help us to save a bit of cash but could you and your family bare to go without a summer vacation this year? A year without a two week vacation can seem like a very long and desperate year but if times are hard what option do you have, if you cannot afford to take your family away on vacation what can you do? Maybe all is not lost there may be something you can do.
A family vacation does not have to be as expensive as you may think; when times are good we spend money with little thought for where it is going or whether we could have saved some money by doing things differently. There is nothing wrong with this as we all enjoy our annual two week vacation with our families but we always have this thought in our mind that they are expensive.
The biggest cost of any holiday is going to be the flight or the accommodation and these are two costs that can be greatly reduced by looking around for a deal. Ever since the inter web exploded into everyone’s life about ten years ago more and more companies have started up selling cheaper and cheaper flights and accommodation on line and of course you now have the low cost airlines that can fly you half way around the world for a little more than a cab fare into town.
The trick to getting a cheap holiday is to use the low cost airlines as your starting point. You may have to spend a little time searching around for the cheapest dates to fly but if you can be flexible on where you want to fly to and the dates that you can go and return you can save yourself a small fortune on the cost of the flight. Many of the low cost airlines now levy a surcharge for the amount of bags that you take as luggage, if you do not need to take a suitcase or can fit two peoples clothing into on case then do so and save a little more money. Another way of saving money is to bring your own food and drink onto the airplane, the airline would love you to buy their food and drink but only because they will charge you a small fortune for the privilege.
Once you have found your low cost flight then it is time to start looking for your accommodation. Unless you can find a last minute deal in a hotel that is unbelievably cheap then steer away from hotels and look towards finding a self catering holiday home. The benefit of getting a self catering holiday homes is that not only are you free to come and go as you please but you have the freedom of being able to cook your own food which is always going to be cheaper than eating in a hotel or a restaurant. This may seem a little much for a holiday but you at least have the choice of when to eat in or dine out rather than having to pay restaurant prices every night. Which ever way you look at it, buying your food and drink from a supermarket and providing for yourself will always be cheaper than letting someone else do the work for you.
If your choice this year is to book a self catering holiday home for your family vacation or to stay at home and miss out on a vacation all together I know which option I would take. Catering for yourself whilst on holiday is wonderful fun as you have to get out and meet people, go shopping for food and drink and experience new things and meet new people, isn’t that one of the things you should look forward to most of all whilst on a vacation?
