There is no getting away from the fact that we live in a very tough world at present. For every one feel good story that we hear or read about there seem to be three doom and gloom stories so trying to bring your children up with the slightest bit of optimism can sometimes be challenging to say the least. Children are not born with a sense of defeatism or negativity it is society that hammers it into them from an early age. Whether it is at school or at home there is no getting away from the fact that some children are more aware of a defeatist attitude than others, and the ones that seem to be more aware of it are generally those that will have a harder time in life when looking to forge a career path for them. So what can us as parents do to keep our children positive and ensure that we give them as bright a start in life as is possible?
Kids thrive off positivity, you only have to see the reaction from a child when you praise him or her for a picture that they may have drawn for you to understand this, when the praise dries up or the realization hits them that maybe they are not very good at drawing then that is when the pictures start coming. Keeping a child positive and learning how to develop their skills whilst they may not be very good at something is a skill that most people have to work on. As we all know, when our boss praises us for a job well done at work we are so much more eager to put our names forward to get involved with another project and push ourselves that little bit for him and the company. This is human nature and children are no different so we need to take a leaf out of our own book and apply this to our child.
We live in a very competitive world and even at child level they can feel the pressure from competition. Feeling pressure due to competition is a good thing, it is what pushes most of us to strive and achieve better things but where a child is concerned they need the encouragement to continue with most things that they may not be very good at. Take sport as an example, if your child is not very good at sports at school he may feel a huge pressure but a negative pressure, the pressure of failure without knowing how to turn this into a positive. We have all seen children throw in the towel when the going gets tough, this is because they have not been taught to keep trying and the natural thing to do when you are no good at something is to give up and try something else.
Sport is a classic example of this, most children love playing out and playing sport but when they realize that they are no good and cannot get involved they become disillusioned with sport and switch off to it totally. This is a terrible thing as sport and the ethos of sport have such a major part to play in a child’s development into an adult that without sport they could lose that competitive edge as well as the untold health problems that can occur.
A solution is finding a sport that you can get involved in with your child, if your child sees you as someone who is not afraid to praise them then they will automatically see you as the good guy, and so they should. Start slowly in whatever you intend doing and just enjoy yourselves. Get yourselves a couple of sets of used golf clubs and start just whacking a few balls around the park, if this proves to be fun then take your used golf clubs to the local driving range and have more fun there. If your child sees you as an outlet for fun and praise then he or she is more likely to follow your lead, which is exactly what a parent should be for a child. So with your used golf clubs you can teach your kid that it is good to be competitive as well as teaching them that they are a worthy person and have every opportunity in life to achieve something.
